Alamo Square Residence – An Organic, Subtle, Beauty

This is a really beautiful remodel in the Alamo Square neighborhood of San Francisco. Included in the remodel were two and a half bathrooms, including a small closet transformed into the master bath, and the master bedroom. Four rooms, transformed completely, one from unusable hovel to luxurious sanctuary. There’s a very good reason this project was included in the winter 2012 Fine Homebuilding Kitchen and Baths Annual edition.

If you start with the master bath, you’ll discover a once closet, complete with water heater, metamorphosed into a fully formed retreat. They’ve added a full shower, a separate soaking tub, and fully modern amenities.

The tawny walls are accented with classic modern light fixtures, which are complimented by natural light for the complete package.

The high ceilings lend the room an extra luxury, accented with crown molding. A lush Victorian wallpaper faux headboard highlights the details, and reflects subtly the light from the sleek modern chandelier, for a particular subtle comeliness. Tucked away behind two vintage track doors is a surprising amount of closet space, and a recessed nook for a dresser or small wardrobe. A last subtle detail, the hanging bedside lamps and floating bedside shelves add an ethereal touch to the already dreamlike bedroom. This is truly the peaceful sanctuary of your dreams.

The room includes a large but private window for lots of natural light, which reflects beautifully off of the large, smooth rectangular white tile. It’s a beautifully clean room, all smooth lines and surfaces. The shower is finished off with a very natural brown textured tile, which, combined with the sleek modern faucet and highly reflective chrome hardware, gives the room a blend of organic and ultra modern. The sink eschews tradition for an angular look, completing the contemporary dream.

In stark contrast to the angular smoothness of the guest bath, this half bath shows more molding, with a deep auburn paint on the upper two thirds of the wall. The autumnal colors in the bath, the walls are complimented with hardwood floors, are highlighted masterfully by the wall sconces and the extravagant old world chandelier.

If you’re looking for tranquility, look no further. These rooms bring together an old world extravagance and a contemporary simplicity in a seamless combination for a nuanced and down-to-earth resident.
